This post is in collaboration with FitFlop to celebrate the launch of the WonderWelly!
Wellness is a concept I properly started to think about earlier this year, before that to be quite honest I had no clue what actually brought me true joy or made me feel like the best version of myself. When it comes to navigating my wellness and self-discovery, moments of silence and being mindful is something I get so much from. True time alone to reflect, face up to the thoughts and beliefs I have and start to unpick them. Now I’m in a place where I’m feeling the best I’ve ever been, there are certain things I’m making a part of my wellness routine that are basically keeping me in check, and allowing my mind to just breathe and overall be more mindful.
wellness – “a conscious, self-directed and evolving process of achieving full potential.” – the national wellness institute.
A big thing that I’ve started doing more is walking. I know it sounds simple to say that, but it’s something my routine was seriously lacking. I drive to work, drive to the gym, drive to the shops, my day to day routine just didn’t include being outside and walking from A to B – and I seriously missed that. I’m lucky to live in Lincolnshire with so many walking routes and nature walks near me, or if I go home back to North Wales there’s nothing I love more than an early morning beach walk. Physically it feels so good, I work in digital marketing so as you can imagine 90% of my days are spent behind a computer, and don’t get me wrong I love what I do but after a week I just need a moment to step back, and for me walking has been that step I needed. I go to the gym quite a bit in the week, and even that just doesn’t do as much as getting out into fresh air and being in nature.
Making walking work for me
For me comfort is king, I’m not about to dedicate a whole section of my wardrobe to walking (maybe one day…). I like to wear something I feel like me in, but also ticks all the comfort boxes. I’ve had quite a few pairs of wellies in the past and I’ve just not found them to be comfortable, but the WonderWelly boots are completely different. So when it comes to walks I’ve been grabbing these comfortable wellies over anything else. FitFlop have well and truly revolutionised wellies, the sole is flexible which makes them so much more comfortable to wear. They also mirror the natural shape of your foot for added comfort which you definitely feel compared to a standard pair of wellies (even the more premium wellies you can buy don’t match up to these, trust me!). I went for the tall military green wellies, I love how these look with black or blue jeans.
To make walking a part of my routine I’ve had to make changes, it’s not been as simple as thinking of a time to go and sticking with it, but I’ve never regretted going afterwards! Overall walking and being more mindful in general has really made me evaluate how much time I actually spend on my phone or infront of the tv, and how actually it doesn’t make me feel that great in the long run. I wake up pretty early anyway, and now the clocks have gone back I would quite like to use any nice mornings we have to actually get out of the house before work and get a small walk in.
The benefits of walking more
For me the biggest benefit I’ve experienced is mental clarity. Walking has been the next best thing to sitting down and actively practising mindfulness. I spoke about it in my camping blog post a couple of months back, but having time in nature and away from any distractions really helps me to disconnect and I do end up feeling better for it overall.
I know walking is one of those things that’s easier said than done, especially if you’re not in the headspace to just get up and go or during the winter months. For me it’s not easy or a natural thought to think ‘yep, I’m going to the park and I’m going to walk’, but I really want to change that and thinking about how I feel afterwards and the positive effects have been enough to get me out of the door.
