Recently I went on a little city break to Krakow then Venice (both places were absolute bliss by the way, more coming on that in another post) I had the mammoth task of taking just hand luggage for a 6 day stay, when it comes to clothes and everything else condensing it down isn’t a problem, liquids and beauty bits on the other hand – the struggle is real. I managed it *hooray to getting through security without a faff* and actually I made use of everything I took.
The skincare bits
Where possible I took miniatures or decanted products into small pots. For cleanser I took the Clinique Take The Day of Cleansing Balm, I can’t tell you how amazing it felt to remove every trace of makeup with this after a long day in the heat. I took enough to do a double cleanse and it was just perfect, it takes no more than a minute to remove all makeup and in general it’s a staple in my routine now. I couldn’t take any oils which I definitely would have liked to, but I did take the Dr Botanicals Pomegranate Sleeping Mask. I received this in a Birchbox and actually it worked well to bring back some moisture to my skin in the evenings, considering it was all I used apart from my SPF and daily moisturiser it kept my skin going through the long days and flights.
For sun protection I used the Ultrasun Ultra High Face SPF. It’s the one I always go back to, absorbs into the skin quickly, doesn’t make me look like casper and my foundation doesn’t look patchy af mid morning applied on top. Most importantly it protects my skin and I don’t feel the need to apply. Lastly my daily moisturiser, I used a sample from AlumierMD. I have been trying a few of their full sized products and wanted to continue testing the brand while I was away. The moisturiser was lightweight, nourishing and worked perfect for the day time helping my makeup look better for longer. For a short city break just using these four products was definitely enough, although my skin was craving a good oil and glow inducing mask after all the flights when I returned home.
The good bit – makeup!
Deciding on what makeup to take was definitely the hardest out of everything, I whittled it down based on what would be most compact and what I could get the most use of out. When it came to base I knew I wanted to take the It Cosmetics CC Cream, not only does it have the added SPF but a light layer of this with a damp beauty blender provides a glowy, medium coverage base that lasts well on my skin. For concealer, again I knew I had to pack the Bobbi Brown Creamy Corrector, it’s a staple in my routine to conceal around my eyes and luckily it’s pretty small and compact. I knew I wanted another concealer just incase my skin decided to grace me with a massive breakout. In the end I went for the Nars Soft Matte Complete Concealer, it’s highly pigmented and long lasting so perfect for blemish concealing, and actually it worked out well to use in any areas I wanted just that touch of extra coverage.
For bronzer I have a mini Benefit Hoola, I find myself reaching for this even day to day because it blends out evenly and really does lift my complexion, it’s just a good staple matte bronzer. Then for blush I had the Benefit Rockateur, honestly I wish I had taken the Charlotte Tilbury Pillowtalk blusher because that’s quickly become my favourite, I really missed how it completes any makeup look, but I had a miniature of this and was clearly in a space saving mindset. Lastly for base I took the Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Finish Powder, I do think this is a little pricey for a powder at £34 *gulp* but, I have slightly oily skin and I can honestly say this keeps my makeup looking flawless pretty much all day. It doesn’t overly matify but definitely locks makeup into place – exactly what you need for a city break.
I’m sure it will come as no surprise that my mascara of choice was the It Cosmetics Super Hero mascara – you can read me harp on about my love for it here. I knew I wanted to take a trusty favourite because it was pretty much all I used on my eyes. Taking the Charlotte Tilbury Lash Curler also made a massive difference, and bonus – it isn’t counting towards that precious space for liquids!
Lastly I still over did it with the lip products and took around five different things, but I actually used everything! I took the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat pencils in Pillowtalk and Iconic Nude, they’re my everyday staples for either a pinky nude or a true nude lip – there was absolutely no questions about those taking up an inch of space. Next I took MAC Velvet Teddy (an absolute classic), MAC Patisserie (perfect for everyday) and the Dior Addict Exfoliating Lipbalm (so bulky but definitely worth it to refresh my lips during the day and give them a gentle exfoliation at the same time).
A very minimal haircare and body routine
Although I did cut back drastically, by the time I had my skincare and makeup products packed in there was next to no room left for haircare, and a body moisturiser was really pushing my luck, but I did manage to squeeze a few miniatures in. As you can see I’m now donning a shorter hair do, the bob cut is pretty new to me so I really didn’t want to be left without anything to help me style it. I took the Sacha Juan Ocean Mist, a god send to add a little texture when I wore my hair wavy – it gives salty beachy hair that isn’t stiff or sticky. For the straight hair days I used the Oribe Dry Texturising Spray to add a little more volume and make everything look less flat. I did also pick up some good old Elnett hairspray from the airport after seeing InTheFrow use it, when it comes to hair products I’m easily influenced.
I had one tiny bit of space left for some form of moisturiser to use on my body, again Birchbox saved the day with a miniature Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse dry oil. It’s a staple for me when it comes to holidays, I used it every single day while I was away. However, my legs get so dry and I definitely did miss a good body butter or rich moisturiser to apply in the evenings.
Having just what I needed with me actually made getting ready easier, I didn’t need 10 lipsticks like I usually take (as much as I love having the choice) and I would say the only thing I missed was a good body moisturiser, which is possibly something I could pick up from the airport next time or take a miniature. From now on I think for most trips away that are a week or less I’ll be sticking to hand luggage *although I’m not making any promises…*
