When we moved into our home we knew we didn’t have a massive
budget to buy all of the dream interior goodies straight away. But actually,
after a fair bit of shopping around I feel like we’ve done a pretty good job of finding some affordable ways to achieve a space we love, and definitely
feels like home. There are a couple of things that have made a huge difference…
I’ve been able to choose a couple of prints from Desenio again, I actually wrote a post with them last year and they very kindly said I
could choose a couple more prints for our new home. Desenio have so many prints so to make it a little easier we
went through room by room then searched based on the colours we wanted the
prints to include. For both the living room and bedroom we went for this Las Vegas Skyline print and Barcelona, our bedroom is grey, white and blush pink, so the Barcelona print brings so much colour to the room. We also opted for gold
frames, I was a little worried about how this would look at first as we do have
a lot of grey, but I actually think the two work really well together.
The only discount code I’ve ever thought worthy of mentioning on my blog is the Desenio one. If you enter the code “jodiemelissa25” you can get 25% off posters* between June 26th – 28th.
*Except for frames and handpicked-/collaboration posters*. So it’s a really good saving!
HOUSE PLANTS/ GREENERY
I am honestly living for house plants, slightly scared that
I’m going to end up killing them but so far so good and I love how much they
manage to brighten any room in the house. I have house plants in the kitchen, bedroom and living room
at the moment. I’m currently looking to buy a monstera (swiss cheese plant) but it’s
going to cost about £70 for the size we need so it’s a bit more of an
investment. I also want to replace the Ivy in my office with a string of pearls.
DIY FURNITURE – to a certain extent!
We decided to invest in our sofa and bed to start off with,
everything else is either from ikea or something old that we have up cycled and
made fit our new home. I’ve used the Annie Sloan chalk paint for a couple of
things which has worked a treat to make them look new again. The reason I’ve put to a certain extent is because sometimes DIY
furniture can have the opposite effect, in my office the furniture was a little more mismatched compared to our bedroom, then we painted a brown set of drawers white to match my desk and it made such a difference. We have also sprayed quite a few things gold (I say we, the husband has), I had so many rose gold things – who remember that phase? so instead of just being unhappy with them we sprayed them gold and now they match our photo frames and all the other gold accessories in the house.
One final thing I think is worth a mention is not relying
on Pinterest/ Instagram too much. Yes it’s good to get inspiration but no ones
house looks as amazing in real life as it does on Instagram. I mentioned this when planning my wedding but it’s so easy to create unrealistic expectations based on what other people’s lives are like. I’m really enjoying doing some DIYs and we’re not at the stage where we will be adding to the house as we go along. The next few things we need is a mirror for above the fire place, rug in the living room and some bits for the spare bedroom.
