Embracing Change and Managing Stress.

A personal goal for this year was - in short - to start looking on the bright side of life. I knew 2018 was going to be eventful, and instead of dreading the huge changes and feeling overwhelmed I wanted to feel excited and optimistic about my future. I know it comes so naturally for some, but for me it really doesn't - I can't be alone in this? I wanted to share how I've been feeling and how I've managed the stress of it all, and actually tried to embrace the change and feel positive about uncertainty, having options, and what's to come.

"Old ways won't open new doors"

I've mentioned The Secret before and how it's really helped me change my outlook on a lot of things. I'm learning that so many life events and big changes can be looked at in a positive way, and having positive thoughts about them = a positive outcome. I've also recently started reading The Magic too, again by Rhonda Byrne it's another uplifting read all about gratitude with some amazing practical tips on how to implement it into your life. I've noticed over the past year and a half, although I have been happy I've also been pretty comfortable, there haven't been any major changes and with that I haven't had many new opportunities to grow as a person or gain new experiences. I rarely have that nervous feeling you get when you step out of your comfort zone, and I almost miss it.
I'm now seeing changing jobs, moving to a completely new city and getting married as so many new doors opening for me. It's an opportunity to try something different, explore some where new and luckily have someone by my side that I love a whole lot. Having this mind set is making the process and lead up to it all so much more exciting.

"An unhappy mind can only create an unhappy life"

During my final year studying psychology I remember learning about stress and just how bad it is. A couple of years back I had my first and only panic attack. I had so many negative thoughts in my mind and so much worry that things would go wrong that I just collapsed. If only back then I had thought about everything in a more positive light and just took better care of myself! I now actively do things that I know make it easier for me to feel happy and positive most of the time, and it works!

For me there are a few things that help me manage stress and feel like I'm on top of everything. I feel like these will be different for everyone but in a nutshell I have been trying to care for myself a little more. I always make sure I'm not swamped with stuff and my space whether at home or work is clean/ tidy (tidy space tidy mind and all that), and I swear by my diary and lists. Organisation is a deal breaker for me, if I can't find my diary I actually go into panic mode because I've got into the habit of writing every single important thing I need to remember in there. It just feels so good to put a tick next to all the little things I have to do (yes, I live for this sort of thing).
I'm always the best version of myself when I look after myself, I've kind of found what makes me tick and I'm more than happy to go with that, be a little selfish at times and make sure I do what makes me happy. When I take a step back, breathe, and just take a moment to be present, I realise how much my mind has been on over drive and how really, I'm often over thinking things that might not even happen!

I still have my bad moments where I can't seem to snap out of overthinking everything, but they are becoming less and less and not lasting anywhere near as long as they used to. I'm embracing getting older and the "scary" things life throws at you.

I hope you have enjoyed this post/ found it useful. I loved writing it and the whole topic of self care and stress management is something I'm really passionate about and it's something I'm definitely having to practise right now! If you have any tips on how to keep your cool when you're loosing your shiz inside then please do let me know...

  1. I completely agree with everything you said. Sometimes new situations and just life in general can feel incredibly overwhelming and what helps me most with this is writing things down, getting organised and trying to not overthink things. If that doesn't help, I find it very helpful to just have a chat about my worries with a good friend or family member as getting things off my chest can sometimes be all thats needed to feel more relaxed again. I think it is super interesting that you are reading 'The Magic' now. Would you say that it has had a positive impact on your life so far (other than making you feel more positive)? I love hearing about peoples experiences with it. :-)

    1. Thank you for commenting Juliane, it's only until reading this that it's actually made me realise how important my family and friends have been in the whole process too. Even just have a couple of people in a support network really can get you through anything! I think you will love The Magic, I definitely am and it's making me feel even more grateful for the wonderful people I have in my life and how lucky I am to have what I already do! I would say The Magic has had a positive impact, amazing things are happening for me and I think it's partly due to that :)

  11. I definitely need to start managing my stress effectively and really take care of myself. Although I am also consciously trying to get myself into a long term positive mindset, nothing ever sticks. I've heard so much about these books, I think it's time to pick them up!
